Though we are mechanical and use modern tractors, we base what we do on pre-WWII practices; before chemicals were introduced into agriculture as pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. These practices are outlined in a terrific book written in 1910 entitled ABC Truck Growing by Sam Dixon, and includes crop rotation, crop cover, animal manure for soil amendments, among others.  We also operate a large greenhouse to extend our seasons for cultivation and harvest.

While the hybridization of crops has brought significantly more yield to a farmer's field, and offers a value, the unintended consequence has been the disappearance from most American's plates of some of God's beautiful creations for our health and culinary delight.  At Yellow Prairie Farm we love providing your family with the kitchen staples necessary for most common recipes, while also supplementing your box with heirloom treasures offering you the opportunity to discover new recipes and be amazed by the vast array of colors, sizes, and nutrition found in crops' original form.  We love hearing from you too.  If there is an heirloom or variety that you are interested in, please recommend it to us, perhaps it will be in your box next season!
